Beyond the Beaches
Koh Phangan is best known for its beaches, but the island has much more to offer. From spectacular viewpoints and jungle waterfalls to pristine diving spots, local markets and a vibrant nightlife scene, it is easy to fill several days without spending all your time on the sand.
Bottle Beach Viewpoint
Perched above the north coast, the Bottle Beach Viewpoint offers one of the finest panoramas on Koh Phangan. After around fifteen minutes on a flat, well-marked trail, it looks out over the famous Bottle Beach and the jungle-covered hills that line this part of the island.
To get there, head towards Thong Nai Pan. Just before reaching the village, a road branches off to the left. The last kilometre is a dirt track — straightforward with no real difficulty. There are one or two small restaurants along the way where you can pick up water if you forgot to bring some. Leave your scooter at the end of the track — that is exactly where the walk begins — and follow the trail on foot.

Note: this starting point is on the opposite side of the island from the trek that descends to Bottle Beach from Haad Khom. The two excursions are entirely separate — different starting points, different elevation, different walking times. If you are looking for the beach trek, that is a different route altogether.
Phaeng Waterfall
At the heart of Koh Phangan, Phaeng National Park protects a vast area of tropical forest. Several trails allow you to explore the mountainous interior of the island and discover a landscape very different from the coastline.
Everyone comes here for the waterfall. It’s the loop that’s worth the detour.
The park entrance is five minutes from Thongsala — a small car park, a ticket booth, a notebook where everyone signs in before heading off. The trail starts just behind. Fifteen minutes along a stream, a pool where Thai families let their children splash around, then the waterfall itself. Most people stop here, swim, and head back.
That’s where it gets interesting. The trail keeps climbing — steep in places, with ropes on some sections — up to the Dom Sila viewpoint, which opens suddenly onto the entire west coast: coconut groves, Thongsala, the sea beyond. And from there, instead of coming back the same way, you can follow the loop: denser forest, four more waterfalls, a return along the other slope. About an hour and a half in total — and the only true loop trail on the island.
That’s also why the season matters less than you’d think. From late March to June, the waterfalls can be nearly dry — and that’s where the disappointed reviews come from. But those who come to walk never leave disappointed: the jungle doesn’t depend on the rain. Zoo Café is on the same road, two minutes from the car park — a fresh coconut on the way out is exactly what’s needed.
Sail Rock, Koh Ma & Koh Raham
The waters surrounding Koh Phangan attract both divers and snorkellers.
For diving, Sail Rock is the most renowned site in the area. Located between Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, it is considered one of the best spots in the Gulf of Thailand, and many dive schools on the island run daily trips.
For snorkelling, Koh Ma is a reliable choice. This small island on the north-west coast of Koh Phangan is connected to Mae Haad by a sandbar at low tide, making it easy to spot tropical fish and shallow reefs.
Further south, Koh Raham offers a different kind of experience. This bar set on rocks facing the sea has become a popular spot for watching fish directly from wooden platforms. The water is particularly clear, and it is not unusual to see a wide variety of fish without even entering the water.
Thong Sala & Chaloklum
The Pantip market in Thong Sala is open for lunch and dinner. Burgers, pizzas, BBQ, Thai food, sandwiches, fresh fruit juices — the stalls cover everything. It’s noisy, lively, and a full meal costs almost nothing. A lot of people on the island eat here rather than cook.
On Saturday evenings, near the pier, the walking street takes over. The road closes to traffic and a whole section of Thong Sala becomes pedestrian. Local families come out, jewellery and clothing stalls set up alongside food stands, a guitar plays somewhere in the street. You eat standing up, haggle over a bracelet, stop for no reason. Two hours here give you a side of the island that the beaches don’t.
Twenty minutes north, Chaloklum holds its own market on Sunday evenings, from 5pm to 9pm. Fishing village, low lights, seafood that just came out of the water. Fewer people. The pace to match.
Over in Wok Tum, a new market has started up on Tuesday evenings, right opposite the Hin Kong Bar. A handful of Thai food stalls, warm lighting, still quiet. It’s young, under the radar, and all signs point to it sticking around.
More Than the Full Moon Party
Koh Phangan is also known for its nightlife. Well beyond the Full Moon Party, the island hosts numerous events every week — beach parties, open-air gatherings and music nights that attract visitors from around the world.
Each venue has its own atmosphere, and each evening its own crowd. Some events are high-energy, others far more relaxed. Having spent much of the year on the island, I am always happy to share my recommendations with guests staying at Villa Altura and point them toward the events best suited to what they are looking for.
An island of contrasts.
Beyond its beaches, Koh Phangan reveals an island rich in contrasts — tropical jungle, marine life, local villages and coastal landscapes, often just minutes apart from one another. It is this diversity that gives the island its character, and that brings so many visitors back year after year.
