Where to Stay in Koh Phangan
Choosing where to stay in Koh Phangan can feel complicated on a first visit. Between the west coast beaches, the villages of the north, the yoga retreats and the famous parties of Haad Rin, each part of the island has its own atmosphere.
The good news is that Koh Phangan remains a relatively compact island. By scooter, most beaches, restaurants and points of interest are within easy reach. Your choice of accommodation depends less on proximity to a particular attraction than on the kind of stay you are actually looking for.
Beaches, sunsets & beachfront dining
The west coast brings together some of the most popular beaches on Koh Phangan — Haad Yao, Haad Salad, Mae Haad and Secret Beach.
This part of the island is particularly known for its sunsets, its restaurants on the water and its easily accessible beaches. The atmosphere is relaxed, attracting couples and travellers who want to alternate beach days, snorkelling and island exploration.
During high season, some beaches can get busy, particularly around Haad Yao and Secret Beach. Outside this period, the pace is generally much quieter.

Ban Kai & Haad Rin
In the south of Koh Phangan, Ban Kai and Haad Rin offer an atmosphere quite different from the rest of the island.
Ban Kai still has relatively unspoiled stretches where coconut groves, quiet beaches and open space dominate the landscape. This part of the coastline has a more discreet character that contrasts with the more developed areas of the island.
Further south, Haad Rin is of course known for the Full Moon Party. But reducing this area to its events would be a mistake. Its long east-facing beach offers a very different landscape from the west coast. Between December and March, the wind and waves create a dynamic atmosphere rarely found elsewhere on Koh Phangan. Even for travellers who don’t attend the parties, Haad Rin is worth a visit.
Local atmosphere, nature & hidden beaches
The north of Koh Phangan has a quieter feel, more oriented toward local life. At the heart of this area, Chaloklum remains one of the most characterful villages on the island — an active harbour, seafood restaurants and an authenticity that contrasts with the busier parts of the island.
Nearby are Malibu Beach and Haad Khom, and access to Bottle Beach, one of the most emblematic beaches on the island. The Sunday evening market in Chaloklum is also a highlight — a gathering around local food, specialities and crafts.
This area particularly appeals to travellers looking for a balance between nature, beaches and a quieter side of Koh Phangan.

Many visitors focus their search on a specific beach or village. Yet a central location often allows you to enjoy more of the island as a whole.
Set on the central hillside of Koh Phangan, Villa Altura allows you to reach the west coast, the north of the island, Thong Sala and Haad Rin with equal ease.
